VISSTA XI report
EISP girls’ trump Clinton a day after the real thing!
The 11th VISSTA event took place here on Friday 11th November under grey and worsening skies that always threatened rain but which never actually arrived until the very final moments of the volleyball final.
EISP boys couldn’t manage to repeat their result of a year ago in VISSTA IX in the football and lost out to Turin in the semi final with a 1-0 loss.
Turin won the final 2-1 against Vicenza Rosà but the big news in football was the introduction of eight brand spanking new goals and lined pitches to help make the tournament a better spectacle than ever before, with more goals going in with the bigger nets being used.
Girls’ basketball made a first ever appearance in the event and I.S Venice beat EISP playing in the primary school gymnasium.
Girls’ football went predictably to EISP with Isabella Pedersen scoring 170 goals in five games; oops I meant to say 17 which isn’t bad either! The big news in girls’ football though was Emma Galimberti grabbing a goal for EISP blue against EIS Vicenza.
The two events that were most passionately supported were girls’ volleyball and boys’ basketball.
The girls won through to the final for the first time in five years and came up against H-school. It was a great game with vociferous support for the girls in blue from the home crowd. They looked like they had blown it at 1-1 in sets and at 12-8 down in the third.
But, COMETH THE MOMENT COMETH THE MAN (OR WOMAN!) and Captain extraordinaire Vittoria Mengoni stepped up to get two vital points which swung the momentum in a way that only seems to happen in volleyball, back in our favour. Suddenly the girls were on fire and the smell of victory caused spectators to stand upwind.
It was screams all round and the match was won at 16-14 as the rain poured in.
To the boys basketball and what an event. Modern sports stadia usually understand the importance of keeping fans close to the pitch for atmospheric reasons but here we take it o a new level!
300 sweaty, dirty, screaming adolescents crunched in to watch EISP smash a tightly fought semi final against Torino and send them into the final against reigning champs H-school. There may have been 300 fans and the noise may have reminded us of 1945 but one year 7 girl took the art of gut busting screaming to a new level. I won’t say her name here but let’s just say that if she doesn’t grow up to be a lead singer of a heavy metal band then I’ll probably grow up to be a squirrel!
Anyway, the ball was great but H-school seemed to just score more baskets despite probably not being superior individually, but just edged it in tight defence that EISP couldn’t match. It finished 19-17 and what an event. Great fun thoroughly enjoyed by all watching.
Lastly, the tug ‘O’ war ended with 3 victories for EISP, 4 fort Vicenza and 5 for H-school leaving them the winners.
Great day, hope you all enjoyed it and see you again at VISSTA XII in the spring.
